The Water Cycle Song
Room 10 has been practicing a song that helps us learn the water cycle....
Water Travels In A Cycle
(Sung to She'll Be Coming 'Round the Mountain)
Water Travels In A Cycle, yes it does.
Water Travels In A Cycle, yes it does.
It goes up as Evaporation.
It forms clouds of Condensation.
It comes down as Precipitation.
Yes it does!

MATH UPDATE:
The students of Room 10 have begun learning about Money (Number Sense and Numeration). We are currently practicing using different coins (understanding value) to represent different numbers. Every Friday the students will be able to purchase items in the "Room 10 Store" with school money they have received throughout the week as a result of achievement points/classroom behaviour etc...Have your student discuss the concept and possibly seek help with counting coins. If you would like to work on money at home using the school money with your child, please let me know and I can provide a few activities.
Thanks!
Please note the below curriculum expectations for Money under Number Sense and Numeration:
Grade 1:
-identify and describe various coins and state their value
-represent money amounts to 20 cents using coin manipulatives
-count forward by 1's, 2's,5's and 10's to 100
Grade 2:
-compose and decompose two-digit numbers in a variety of ways using materials (such as coins)
-estimate, count, and represent the value of a collection of coins
GRADE 2 ASSIGNMENT:
The following message was sent home today with an attached checklist.
The following message was sent home today with an attached checklist.
Dear Parents,
For the past few weeks we have been learning about Growths
and Changes in Animals. Throughout the next few weeks as we continue on with
our Science Program (Air and Water, Liquids/Solids/Gases, Mapping) we will continue
to explore the various types of animals and discuss where they live.
The students will be creating their OWN animals and
will be presenting it to the rest of the class. All of the required elements of
this project will be due on: April 17th,
2014. Presentations will begin on April
17th, 2014.
Please see the attached checklist as the students will
need to answer the questions during their presentation.
The students will have class time to work on their
animals and if are able to work with me during recess if they need extra help
when answering their questions, researching different types of animals, help
with their poster.
Please note over the next few weeks the students will be completing research, be shown examples of a completed project/poster and will have an opportunity to discuss their ideas with each other.

Last week
we had “Artsfest”,it was fun. We did a Greek dance. We also sang three songs in
choir. It was fun watching other school and classes. It was exciting when we
were about to perform.
Post by Ms. Givelos: The students danced the Greek Cultural Dance "Sirtaki" and worked with Levels, Forms of Dance, Pace as part of The Arts Curriculum.
Daily Math Riddles
By: Veronica (Grade 2)
By: Veronica (Grade 2)
Every day
we have a riddle on our lockers some are different and some are the same. It is
going to help us with our math program. Every day we take it of our lockers and
go into the class and write it. If we don’t know how to write it we can draw
it.
Post by Ms. Givelos: As part of our Geometry program and recognizing/describing 3D shapes the students of Room 10 have a Daily Math Riddle that relates and describes shapes by their real life connection, number of 2D faces, edges and vertices. This week the students will be creating 3D shapes using straws, they will be assessed in their ability to create and describe the shapes based on their attributes.

Learning a Greek Cultural Dance
By: Brigid and Sidonie
By: Brigid and Sidonie
We learned how to do a Greek dance. Sirtaki is the
name of the Greek dance. Step 1slide to the right slide to the left then slide
to the right. Step 2 step forward and kick behind you with your right foot.
Step 3 Kick forward with your right foot and then your left and then your right
again well going backwards. Step 4 step forward with your right then pretend to
step forward with your left and tap your heal with your left foot. That’s all
we know. We like the dance because
it is fun/cool and you get to learn new dance moves.

January News
What's new in SCIENCE?
The grade 2's started researching facts about different animals and their characteristics.... We will be creating our own animals and discussing why they have certain characteristics! (e.g. a shell to protect themselves)
The grade 1's are taking care of plant (they named the plant "Minty") and are going to watch how it grows. In February, they will be putting the plant in a bigger pot with more soil to observe the changes. They will be recording this information in their Observation Books.

What's happening in Math?
GEOMETRY. The students of Room 10 have been creating pictures using 2D geometric shapes such as triangles, squares, trapezoids etc... We have also been exploring SYMMETRY. The students began creating pictures using geometric shapes to demonstrate their understanding of SYMMETRY.
We also rearranged our class mat to be symmetrical.
LITERACY:
We have been exploring and retelling the MAIN IDEA and DETAILS in various stories in order to improve our sentence writing and our oral communication. The students of ROOM 10 worked with a partner to describe steps on how to colour in the same pictures. They were not allowed to see their partners picture, they had to use their words to describe their actions.
THE ARTS:
The students of Room 10 are collaborating with Room 9 to learn a Cultural Greek dance. They will be performing this dance at Arts Fest in February.
LAST WEEK OF JANUARY:
Wednesday - Officer Eric came in and discussed Internet Safety and Street Safety with the students.
Thursday - We went to Humber College and the students got to check out some great inventions.
Friday - We went to the ROM and the students got to explore the different exhibits.

Memories from 2013 by Eva
Baking Is Fun!
To help us learn how to write Recipes, Room 10 (Ms. Givelos’ class) and Room 15 (Ms.Kondo’s class) got together and made some delicious brownies and rice crispy squares! We used about 100 marshmallows for the rice crispy squares and the brownies had lots of cocoa! We separated in to groups, some grade 1/2s went to help the HSPs make brownies and some HSPs went to help the rest of the 1/2s make rice crispy squares. When everything was baked, ready and cooled down we all ate them, they were all so delicious. At the end we all made recipie books for each other. BAKING IS FUN!!!
